Turn your Android into a media remote with only WiFi and SSH

Who needs cute apps with huge footprints and their server counterparts running in our computers when we've got good ol' SSH. Here's how you do it.

depends.
  • your computer: sshd, a media player (duh)
  • your Android : ssh, a full keyboard [optional] (Hacker's Keyboard?)
  • And you will need a network to connect them together. Your phone's WiFi hotspot could just work fine.
Just to clarify, I'm using openssh and mpv on my computer and Termux with ssh installed on my Android. Almost anything should work.
steps.
  1. SSH to your computer from your phone.
  2. Export DISPLAY so the terminal emulator knows which display to play media on. (Skip if you're just playing audio.)
  3. Play it.

  4. Profit.
And it's much better with ranger.

If you've got a Raspberry PI hooked into your TV this an *extremely* lightweight alternative to KODI.
